Exploring Creativity at O’Reilly’s 2024 International Bird Week
An Inspiring Residency
For the seventh year in a row, TamlynG, art teacher and designer, has brought her vibrant energy and creative expertise to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat during Bird Week. This unique annual event celebrates the incredible biodiversity of the rainforest, and TamlynG’s art residency has become a highlight for attendees of all skill levels. From seasoned artists to beginners just picking up a paintbrush, everyone is welcomed into her workshops with warmth and enthusiasm.
Day One and Two kicked off with an imaginative exploration of bird-themed art. Participants used watercolors and mixed media tools like black and white markers to create colorful birds. Once the paintings were complete, the real fun began—cutting out these bird illustrations and placing them into humorous and creative scenarios inspired by Bird Week. The results were both entertaining and deeply personal, as each participant infused their work with unique charm and personality.
TamlynG's approachable teaching style ensured that even those new to painting felt confident and excited to dive into the process. It was a joyful start to the residency, setting a tone of experimentation and fun.
On the third day, participants explored new techniques on watercolor paper, producing striking effects using a combination of white crayons, cream-consistency watercolors, alcohol-based mediums, and glad wrap. The layering of these materials created intricate, organic patterns that mimicked the textures of the rainforest. The process was not only a lesson in artistic innovation but also a meditative experience, as attendees marveled at the interplay of colors and materials.
Despite some stormy weather, spirits remained high throughout Bird Week. The natural drama of the rainforest served as an inspiring backdrop for creativity. One of the week’s highlights was the discovery of bird species that had not been seen on this side of the border in years—a reminder of the event’s importance in fostering both artistic and ecological awareness.
The residency also provided a chance to connect with the legendary Peter O’Reilly, whose passion for Bird Week adds an extra layer of significance to the retreat. His stories and insights enriched the experience, making it even more memorable for participants and artists alike.
TamlynG’s residency at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat continues to be a testament to the power of art in bringing people together. By blending creative expression with the natural beauty of the rainforest, she creates a space where people of all skill levels can explore their potential, connect with nature, and celebrate the wonders of Bird Week.
As the event wrapped up, participants left not only with beautiful artworks but also with a sense of accomplishment and inspiration. Whether returning next year or trying their hand at art for the first time, they’ll carry forward the lessons and joy they found at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat.
