Isolation Exhibition

Traveling has always been my greatest passion, and combining it with my love for art made for an unforgettable seven-week adventure across Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Queensland. With a camper trailer in tow, I set out to explore 13,000 kilometres of diverse landscapes, capturing the beauty of nature through my artwork and photographs.

The journey began in the picturesque Gold Coast Hinterland, and from there, we embarked on a thrilling drive to Birdsville, then up to Mount Isa, and finally down to Alice Springs. The highlight of the trip was witnessing the magnificent full moon rising over Uluru (Ayers Rock). I managed to capture this awe-inspiring sight on film, which became a cherished memento of the trip. The Olgas and Hermannsburg followed, offering vistas that echoed the landscape portrayed in the artworks of Namanjira. I felt a deep connection to the surroundings and immersed myself in photographing and painting the white gum trees that seemed to spring from the pages of Namanjira's masterpieces.

The road beckoned us further as we ventured to Wolf Creek Crater on the Tanami Road, to Fitzroy Crossing, and ultimately reached the delightful town of Derby. Here, I engaged with the friendly locals and even conducted a 'Beginners Watercolor Workshop' for newfound friends. The Derby experience was laid-back and heart warming, with the highlight being the crab races at the Kalyara Bar and Fishing Club.

The journey continued with a visit to the enchanting town of Broome and then Middle Lagoon - Cape Leveque. The shanty on the hill offered breathtaking views, and I found myself lost in the serenity, sketching and painting to my heart's content. Day trips around Cape Leveque fuelled my inspiration, and my trusty sketchbook was soon filled with colors and impressions from these remarkable places.

I actually had time to sketch and paint, working out my color combinations of the different areas l had visited and storing them in my trusty sketch book that was starting to fill up. Day trips to areas around Cape Leveque were inspirational and l have many photographs.

As we headed back home, we passed through Wyndham and 'The Grotto,' capturing the beauty of little yellow flowers l kept seeing everywhere. Flying over Lake Argile and witnessing the mesmerizing 'Bungle Bungles' left an indelible mark on my soul, adding to the treasury of memories from this epic adventure.

Upon returning, I compiled my artwork, notes, and photographs, and an idea began to take shape. The thought of an exhibition was born, showcasing the colors and beauty of the diverse Australian landscapes. However, just as plans were coming together, COVID struck, and we faced lockdowns. Despite the setbacks, I was fortunate to have my studio to work in, and with determination, I transformed my dream into a reality. An intimate studio exhibition was filmed by a dear friend, Matt, who brought my artwork to life on video.

From this body of work, I created vibrant repeat patterns and captivating artworks, each reflecting the essence of the places I had traversed. The exhibition was a testament to the incredible journey I had undertaken and an homage to the vast and diverse landscapes of Australia.

Looking back on those seven weeks, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and artistic inspiration I gathered along the way. The adventure may have been tiring with long drives, but it was undoubtedly rewarding. To those contemplating a similar journey, I offer a piece of advice: take more than seven weeks! Embrace the drive by sketching and photographing from the car – Australia is a vast and beautiful canvas waiting to be captured and immortalized in your artwork

As I reminisce on the "Broome and Back" expedition, I am reminded of the sheer beauty of our world and the wonders that await those who dare to explore. My artwork now serves as a visual memoir of an adventure that has forever left its mark on my heart and my canvas.
